Stakeholders warn residents of Port Harcourt against act that could trigger fire

As the dry season sets in, residents of Port Harcourt and its environs have been advised to be mindful of their activities to avert fire disasters. Head of operation, Federal Fire Service Mr. Abbas Reagan gave this advice at a stakeholders meeting on disaster management organized by the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, South south zonal office in Port Harcourt. Mr. Reagan while highlighting challenges they encounter in the cause of responding to emergencies in situations of fire outbreak, said most times victims delay in contacting the Fire service. Mr. Reagan however assured that measures have been put in place by the service to tackle any fire emergency during this season. Earlier in his address, NEMA’s South south Zonal Coordinator, Mr. Walson Ibarakumo said emergency situations occur frequently in the region with devastating consequences, hence the need for stakeholders to prepare effectively in order to reduce the impact. Police arrest late Matilda's boyfriend in Port Harcourt

Rivers State Police Command has arrested the Boyfriend of late Matilda Mark Itonyo who was raped and murdered at her apartment at back gate of Rivers State University on the 10th of December, 2019. The spokesman of the Command, Nnamdi Omoni who confirmed the development said investigations are on to arrest other individuals who maybe link to the murder of the final year student of Department of Law at the Rivers State University. Mr. Omoni said if at the end of investigation by the Department of State Criminal Investigation, the suspect is proven innocent he will be released while investigation to get the perpetrators of the act will continue.

Respect court of law ...Justice Georgewill tell lawyers

Lawyers has been advised to be respectful to the court of law, Justice Biobele Georgewill gave this advise while delivering a lecture on understanding the expectations of the judge for effective legal practice at a seminar organized by the Continuing Legal Education committee of the PortHarcourt branch of Nigerian Bar Association to mark the law week. Justice Georgewill charged young lawyers to encourage judges for better performance ,stressing that lawyers should understand that the public looks up to them for the protection of justice and as such the profession must be put ahead of personal gains. On his part,Chairman Continuing Legal Education committee, Barrister Tonye Krukrubo said the event is a knowledge sharing program where lawyers at all levels seat down to discussed issues pertinent to effective administration of justice for Rivers state and Nigeria as a whole. NBA decries violation of Human Rights

The Nigerian Bar Association, Port Harcourt branch has decried the violation of Human rights even by the security agencies who are supposed to protect the rights of citizens. Vice Chairman of the branch who is also the chairman Human Rights Committee, Barrister Chidi Ekeh said this at a seminar organized to celebrate the 71st United Nations International Human Rights day, maintained that the importance of Human rights cannot be over emphasized. Barrister Ekeh noted that the Nigerian Bar Association will continue to create awareness on the importance of upholding Human Rights. Final year law student kill in Port Harcourt

The Rivers State Police command has confirmed the dead of a final year law student of the Rivers State university ,Maltida Mark from Bayelsa state. The corpse of Maltida was found along the road leading to the school main gate . The command spokesman Mr. Nnamdi Omoni said investigation has commenced to unravel her killers.Mr. Omoni stressed that the command will leave no stone unturn in bringing the perpetrators of this barbaric act to book. Meanwhile the remains of Maltida has been deposited in the morgue ,barely two weeks a lady called Charity Ohaka from emouha was killed and her corpse found in a well in Rumuosi community Obio Akpor local government area of the state.
