APGA National Chairman Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa Advocates for Urgent Electoral Reforms and Technological Advancement in Nigeria's Democracy

Written By Nduka Anyanwu

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa, has issued a compelling call for Nigeria to embrace sweeping electoral reforms, uphold electoral justice, and adopt full electronic voting systems as essential steps toward strengthening democracy and ensuring sustainable development across the nation.

Barrister Ezeokenwa emphasized that Nigeria’s democratic progress hinges on the integrity and transparency of its electoral processes. He underscored that "Yes to electoral reforms, Yes to electoral justice, and Yes to full electronic voting" are not just slogans but critical imperatives for the nation’s democratic consolidation.

Electoral Reforms as a Necessity

Barrister Ezeokenwa pointed out that Nigeria’s electoral history has been marred by irregularities, violence, and allegations of manipulation, which have undermined public confidence in the democratic process.

He called on the government and relevant electoral bodies to undertake comprehensive reforms that address legal loopholes, strengthen institutional independence, and improve voter education.

Upholding Electoral Justice

He stressed that electoral justice must be prioritized to ensure that disputes are resolved fairly and promptly. “Justice is the bedrock of democracy,” he declared.

"We must have independent electoral tribunals and mechanisms that guarantee that every Nigerian’s vote is protected and their mandate respected.

Advocacy for Full Electronic Voting

The APGA leader lauded the potential of technology to revolutionize Nigeria’s electoral system through full electronic voting. He highlighted that electronic voting could minimize human errors, reduce electoral fraud, and speed up result transmission, thereby boosting transparency and public trust.

While acknowledging concerns about cybersecurity, Barrister Ezeokenwa assured that with proper planning and international best practices, Nigeria could successfully implement this modern approach.

Democracy and Development

He further elaborated that credible elections are the foundation of true democracy, which in turn fuels sustainable development.

When leaders are chosen through transparent and just processes, they are more accountable, responsive, and committed to serving the people’s interests.

A Call for Collective Action

Barrister Ezeokenwa urged stakeholders—government officials, electoral agencies, civil society, the media, and ordinary Nigerians—to rally behind these reforms.

"Our collective effort is vital to transforming Nigeria into a nation where democracy thrives, justice prevails, and development is sustainable,” he stated.

Conclusion

Concluding his remarks, the APGA Chairman reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for electoral reforms and technological advancement, emphasizing that Nigeria’s future depends on the integrity of its electoral processes.

He cited the words of Nelson Mandela: "A winner is a dreamer who never gives up," inspiring Nigerians to dream of a better, more democratic Nigeria.

About APGA

The All Progressives Grand Alliance remains committed to the ideals of democracy, justice, and development, working tirelessly to ensure that Nigeria’s electoral future is bright, credible, and inclusive.
