OPINION: The Crucial Need For An Impartial INEC To Safeguard Nigeria’s Democratic Future As Opined By National APGA Chairman Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa

Written By Nduka Anyanwu

In Nigeria’s democratic journey, the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) cannot be overstated.

As the primary institution responsible for conducting elections, INEC’s integrity and impartiality are vital to ensuring that Nigeria’s electoral process remains free, fair, and credible.

An impartial INEC acts as the bedrock of electoral integrity, fostering public trust and confidence in the democratic process.

It is essential that the commission’s decisions and actions are devoid of partisan influence, bias, or external pressures, which could undermine the legitimacy of electoral outcomes.

As Nigeria Senate prepares to screen a new INEC Chairman, the emphasis must be on an individual with proven integrity, unwavering independence, and a steadfast commitment to NEUTRALITY.

Such qualities are critical in enabling the commission to operate transparently and effectively, thereby reinforcing the democratic principles upon which Nigeria’s nationhood is built.

The credibility of elections directly impacts the legitimacy of elected governments; thus, an impartial INEC ensures that the will of the Nigerian people is accurately reflected in leadership choices, safeguarding the fundamental rights of citizens to participate freely in the democratic process.

Moreover, an independent and impartial electoral body contributes to national stability by reducing the likelihood of electoral disputes and tensions that often threaten to destabilize the country.

It also strengthens democratic institutions by promoting accountability, transparency, and the rule of law. When citizens trust that elections are conducted fairly, they are more likely to engage actively in the democratic process, fostering a more inclusive and resilient democracy.

Upholding these principles is not only essential for the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system but also for the broader health of its democracy.

An impartial INEC acts as a guardian of democratic values, ensuring that Nigeria’s democracy remains resilient, inclusive, and truly reflective of the will of its people.

As Nigeria navigates this critical period of leadership screening exercise, the emphasis must be on SAFEGUARDING THE INDEPENDENCE AND NEUTRALITY OF INEC, thereby securing a democratic future that is just, transparent, and enduring.
