APGA Makes Move, Suggest Solutions to Incessant Abduction, Bandits and Terrorist Activities In Nigeria

Written by Nduka Anyanwu

Nigeria is currently facing an unprecedented wave of insecurity that threatens the peace, unity, and development of the nation. From incessant abductions, banditry, insurgency, to terrorism, the menace has become a daily reality for millions of Nigerians. It is imperative that Nigerians understand the root causes, the current state of affairs, and the strategic measures needed to effectively combat this crisis.

WHAT NIGERIANS NEED TO KNOW

The Severity of the Crisis

The security situation has deteriorated significantly, with reports of high-profile abductions of schoolchildren, farmers, and community members. Banditry and terrorism are no longer localized but have spread across multiple states, destabilizing communities and economies.

ROOT CAUSES

Political Neglect and Corruption: Lack of political will and corruption have hampered effective security responses.

Poor Intelligence and Security Apparatus: Inadequate intelligence-sharing and poorly funded security agencies hinder timely responses.

Socioeconomic Factors: Poverty, unemployment, and marginalization fuel grievances exploited by insurgents and bandits.

Illegal Arms and Cross-Border Infiltration: The proliferation of arms through porous borders amplifies violence.

IMPACT ON NIGERIA

  • Loss of lives and property
  • Disruption of education and economic activities
  • Increased displacement of persons and internally displaced persons (IDPs)
  • Erosion of public confidence in government institutions

A COMMON STRATEGY TO CURB THE MENACE

In the words of Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa, the APGA National Chairman, a unified, multi-faceted approach is essential:

  • Enhanced Intelligence and Security Collaboration
  • Strengthening intelligence gathering and sharing among security agencies.
  • Establishing regional and international cooperation to track and dismantle insurgent networks.
  • Community Engagement and Vigilance
  • Empowering local communities to participate in security efforts.
  • Promoting community policing to foster trust and cooperation.
  • Socioeconomic Interventions
  • Addressing poverty and unemployment through development programs.
  • Creating economic opportunities in vulnerable regions to reduce the appeal of criminal groups.
  • Border Security and Arms Control
  • Securing Nigeria’s borders to prevent illegal arms influx.
  • Crackdowns on illegal arms markets and cross-border activities.
  • Legal and Policy Frameworks
  • Enacting and enforcing stringent laws against terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping.
  • Ensuring swift justice to serve as a deterrent.
  • Leadership and Political Will
  • Strong, decisive leadership at the federal and state levels.
  • Accountability and transparency in security operations.

CONCLUSION

The fight against insecurity requires a collective effort—government, security agencies, communities, and international partners must work hand-in-hand. Nigerians deserve peace, safety, and development; it is time for concerted action grounded in strategic planning and unwavering political will.

The time to prepare is now—Nigeria’s democracy depends on it.
