The Urgent Need For Sustained Reforms In Nigeria - An Exclusive Insight By APGA National Chairman

Written By Nduka Anyanwu

Nigeria’s development hinges on the successful implementation of key reforms aimed at transforming governance, enhancing transparency, and boosting economic growth.
However, despite numerous initiatives, the country continues to face significant challenges in translating policies into tangible outcomes. As the leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Barrister Sly believe it is crucial to confront the core issues impeding effective reform execution.

Continuity in Policy: A Major Obstacle
Inconsistent Political Will Threatens Progress
One of the most pressing issues is the lack of continuity in reform efforts. Political transitions often lead to the abandonment or dilution of programs, preventing reforms from maturing and achieving their goals. For sustainable development, reforms must be institutionalized beyond individual administrations, becoming ingrained in Nigeria’s governance structure.

Monitoring Mechanisms: The Need for Robust Systems
Weak Oversight Hampers Reform Effectiveness
Effective reforms require strong monitoring and evaluation systems. Initiatives like the State Fiscal Transparency, Accountability, and Resilience (SFTAS) and the Systematic Approach to Budget Execution and Review (SABER) have introduced vital tools—such as Bank Verification Numbers (BVN)—to fight payroll fraud and promote transparency. Yet, these tools often fall short due to inconsistent enforcement and lack of institutional backing, limiting their impact.

Political Interference: A Barrier to Genuine Change
Vested Interests Undermine Reform Efforts
Political interference remains a significant hurdle. When vested interests influence the implementation of reforms, the outcomes are compromised, and public trust erodes. True reform requires leadership committed to the public good, prioritizing institutional integrity over partisan or personal gains.

Charting a Path Forward: Strategies for Effective Reform
Institutionalizing Continuity and Strengthening Oversight
To overcome these challenges, Nigeria must adopt a comprehensive approach:
Establish Independent Oversight Bodies: To ensure reforms are implemented consistently, free from political interference.
Invest in Institutional Capacity: Leveraging technology, regular audits, and transparent reporting to monitor progress.
Foster Political Will: Leaders must demonstrate genuine commitment to reform, prioritizing national interests.

A Call to Action for All Stakeholders
Uniting for a Reformed Nigeria
Reforms are only as strong as the collective will to see them through. Civil society, the private sector, government officials, and citizens must work together to uphold transparency, accountability, and discipline in implementation. Superficial changes are not enough; Nigeria needs deep, lasting reforms grounded in integrity and continuity.

Conclusion: Building a Prosperous Nigeria
The gap between policy formulation and effective implementation remains a critical challenge for Nigeria. Closing this gap requires unwavering commitment, institutional strengthening, and political will. As APGA’s leader, Barrister Ezeokenwa call on all stakeholders to rise to the occasion and transform Nigeria’s reform landscape—making it a beacon of transparency, efficiency, and sustainable development for generations to come.
