Civil Society groups express satisfaction on Ogoni clean up

Civil Society groups have expressed satisfaction with the level of work at different remediation sites in Ogoni land. The Project Officer, Energy and Climate Change Environmental Rights Action, Mr. Kentebe Ebinridor, expressed the feeling while assessing the work done by contractors at different lots in Ogoni land. According to Mr. Ebinridor, the progress made on the cleanup is beyond their preconceived position. The Environmental Activist however called for speedy action by the contractors. Similarly, the spokesman for Civil Society Legislative Center Abuja, Mr. Ibrahim Idris lauded HYPREP for their efforts in cleanup exercise but demanded that standards should not be lowered. On his part, Communication Officer HYPREP, Mr. Kpobari Nafo who took the Civil Society groups to different sites debunked insinuations from some quarters that Ogoni cleanup exists only on newspaper pages. Women flee waterfront in Rivers community for fear of being rape by hoodlums

Some women have packed out from Urualla Waterfront in Mile 1 Diobu, Port Harcourt, Rivers State over cases of armed robbery and rape by suspected cultists. A female resident of the community who did not want her name mentioned for security reasons explained that about ten women who narrowly escaped been raped by hoodlums after they were robbed last week are the latest to have fled the area. The resident explained that the hoodlums ordered the ladies to stripe themselves naked after robbing them of their valuables .She stated that in one of the incidents ,the ladies had striped themselves naked when a vehicle blaring serene drove along the street very close to the waterfront which made the robbers abandon the mission of raping their victims and took to their heels ,thinking it was police officers on patrol. Pandemonium in Uniport as students disrupts ASUU meeting

There was confusion at the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU, secretaria t, University of Port Harcourt chapter as some students under the auspices of the student union government disrupted an ongoing media briefing by the staff Union. The students led by the SUG President Sowari Dikibo carried placards with different inscription such as "say no to ASUU strike", "say no to alteration of our academic calender", l"let four years be fours years" and chanting solidarity songs. Efforts by the ASUU Chairman Dr. Austen Sado and the executives to placate the students proved abortive as they refused to leave the hall. The students then forced their way to the platform and engaged in long session of solidarity songs as ASUU members, lecturers watched helplessly.

Old Catholic Apostolic Church inaugurates in Rivers State

The Old Catholic Apostolic Church has been inaugurated in Rivers State. Reverend father Calixtus Oke who is the premier priest in the state said Old Catholic Apostolic church is returning to the old practices of the early church. Reverend Father Oke said the inauguration marked the new beginning of the early apostolic practices before errors set into the church adding that the main aim of Old Catholic is not because their priest can marry but that the church have to embrace the real practices of the early church. Reacting to the issue of marriage by the Roman Catholic Priests, the Reverend father said celibate life was not a practice in the bible quoting that Apostle Paul mentioned it as a gift and not mandatory. No one has come to claim corpses of female victims of Port Harcourt serial killing... Rivers CP

Rivers State Commissioner of Police Mustapha Dandaura has expressed worry that several months after corpses of female victims of the Port Harcourt serial killing incidents were deposited at the morgue, nobody has come forward to identify and claim their bodies for burial. CP Mustapha Dandaura stated this when he received an award of excellence conferred on him by Port Harcourt Significant Girls Initiative - PHSGI in Port Harcourt for the proactive response of the force in arresting the prime suspect of the serial killing of young ladies in Port Harcourt hotels, Gracious David West. Dandaura advised young ladies in the state who lead wayward lifestyles to turn a new leaf, stressing that only those who engage in commercial sexual activities would decide to follow a man they have never met before to lodge in a hotel. An Environmentalist decries embarrassing state of wastes in Rivers State

An environmental activist,Director of Health of Mother Earth Foundation Dr. Nnimmo Bassey has berated the unhygynic lifestyle of some residents of Port Harcourt. The environmentalist noted that in time past port Harcourt was known as the garden city as it used to be a very clean and attractive place but that the story has changed. He noted that a walk round the city is a showcase of piles of trash at the median of roads. Speaking to our correspondent, the environmental activist said the management of wastes in the State was not receiving the needed attention. Keke Drivers protest multiple ticketing in Port Harcourt metropolis

Some tricycle operators popularly known as Keke riders plying Ada George, Agip and Iwofe roads have called on the Rivers State Government to get rid of illegal tickets in the State. The keke riders lamented that despite the newly approved ticket by the State Government they are being forced to get daily tickets from different task force in the area. One of the rider Mr. Edwin Igwe who spoke with our correspondent said recently the union came with security Agencies to arrest some of their members for refusing to buy their own ticket which is different from the state Government approved ticket. Also speaking, Mr. Chigozie and Mr. Joe Urman appealed to the government to prevail on the security agencies to release their members in Police custody, stressing that they do nothing wrong to warrant arrest. The keke riders however appealed to the Rivers State government to intervene on the issue to avoid increment on transport fares.
