Relief materials worth millions of naira have been donated to families of victims of the Polo Club stampede in Port Harcourt by the Federal Government.
President Muhammad Buhari while delivering the items through the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA; encouraged families of victims to take solace in God.
The tragedy happened in Port Harcourt on the 28th of May 2022 when over thirty people including children lost their lives when a church in Port Harcourt organized free shopping for indigent people.
The items to be distributed to families of victims of the stampede was received by the Senior Pastor of the church.
The president represented by Director General NEMA ; Mr. Mustapha Ahmed said the items donated was in line with the agency’s mandate to identify with disaster victims.
He said NEMA is saddled with responsibility of Disaster management, coordinating resources towards efficient and effective disaster prevention, preparedness and response in the country.
President Buhari promised to partner the state on establishment of Local Emergency Management Committee to take disaster risk reduction to the grass roots.
On his part, Governor Nyesom Wike represented by the Deputy Governor Dr. Ipalibo Banigo while welcoming the Director General in Government House Port Harcourt lauded effort of the federal government in responding to disasters.
Governor Wike said the state is always proactive when it comes to Disaster Emergency Management.
The Governor advised NGos and Churches to always involve department of Emergency disaster Management in the Ministry of Special Duties when planning outreach programs.
Receiving the materials unbehalf of families of the victims senior pastor The Kings Assembly Chris Ugoh thanked the Federal government for their support and promised to ensure even distribution of the items.
Pastor Ugoh said since 2014 the church had been doing outreach programs to cater for the need of the less privilege in PortHarcourt and it's environs. The Pastor urged relevant authorities to take up the responsibility of seeing to the needs of the less privilege in the society.
The Director General was accompanied on the visit by heads of security agencies in the state and the Lawmaker representing Obio Akpor Federal Constituency Mr Kingsley Chinda.
Items donated include rice, vegetable oil, seasoning cubes ,salt, mosquito nets among others.
