Adolescents Urged To Champion HIV/ AIDS Prevalence Amongst Their Peers .....as PHALGA wins ADOKIT competition

Participants at the just concluded State level Grand Finale Competition for Adolescent Kits, a UNICEF's sponsored Intervention programme targeting adolescents, have been urged to remain agents of change in reducing cases of stigma and discrimination and other HIV/AIDS related issues amongst their peers.


The pilot training programme which had the participants drawn from Egegde and Nakan communities in PortHarcourt City  and  Obio/Akpor  local government areas of the State was done in commemoration of  this year's Day of the African Child celebrated every 16th of June and International Youth Day on August 11.

Speaking at the event, the Programme Manager,  Rivers State Agency for the Control of AIDS, RIVSACA, Dr Francis Nazigga said, the training aimed at building capacity of young people, adolescents living with HIV/AIDS and the general populace with skills in restoring their self esteem to cope in a stressful environment or conditions.

The RIVSACA'S  Programme Manager, Dr Francis Nagazzia expressed willingness of his agency to sustain the programme through  documentation and monitoring as well as the involvement of key stakeholders.

On his part, UINICEF's National Master Trainer for ADOKIT Programme, Mr Opeyemi Yekini while thanking the State Government for creating the enabling environment for the programme to succeed, noted that, the training had tremendous impact on adolescents as issues of drug abuse, poor hygiene, teenage pregnancy among others have drastically reduced in the State.

Mr Opeyemi Yekini appealed to the media to ensure that in their reportage, release and broadcast they have zone tolerance on stigma and discrimination.

Earlier in his goodwill  message at the event, the State's Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Communication,  Mrs Ibiwari Clapton Ogolo, represented by the Director Administration in the Ministry, Dr Onyeka Ugo Sam commended RIVSACA for their committment in the fight against HIV/AIDS in the State and pledged his Ministry's support to the mitigation of the spread of the epidemic in the State. 

Dr Ugo Sam while urging the adolescents to be crusaders in the eradication of HIV/AIDS, asked every citizen and those doing business to partner with the present administration in ensuring that Rivers State remains the best in the community of States in Nigeria by being their best in whatever they do.

In their various responses, the participants expressed gratitude to UNICEF and the State Government for training.

The ADOKIT Competition which featured drama, quiz, speak out, creativity, community action had PortHarcourt City Local Government emerging winners as they were presented with trophies medals and gift donations.

Minaibim Harry Emerges As National Rescue Movement Governorship Candidate

Ghost Lawyer Defends Client in Port Harcourt Court

  A magistrate court sitting in Port Harcourt was thrown into confusion today Thursday, the 12th of March, 2026 when it noticed that a lawyer who had died since last year, 2025 December appeared before it on Tuesday the 10th of February, 2026 to conduct his matter. When the matter was called for hearing, and the lawyer was not present, the court on inquiry was informed by the litigant that his lawyer died since last year December 2025. The court, presided over by Senior Magistrate Kingsley Briggs became confused and had to search through his record book, where he confirmed the lawyer’s presence during proceeding on Tuesday the 10th day of February, 2026. The Senior Magistrate informed the litigant on how the court had wanted to issue a bench warrant against him if not for the intervention of his lawyer who pleaded that he the litigant was sick and needed medical attention.
