Senate Passes Landmark State Police Bill, Approves Constitutional Framework For Decentralised Policing

The Senate on Wednesday passed the landmark Constitution Alteration Bill seeking the establishment of state police across the federation, marking a historic step in Nigeria’s decades-long effort to decentralise policing and strengthen the country’s security architecture. President Bola Tinubu had earlier transmitted the constitutional amendment bill to the Senate as part of broader efforts to reform Nigeria’s security architecture and create a legal framework for a dual policing system that would allow states to establish and operate their own police services alongside the Federal Police. The bill, titled “A Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to Provide for the Establishment of State Police and Related Matters (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026 (SB. 1055),” scaled third reading after extensive deliberations and clause-by-clause consideration by lawmakers. Its passage represents one of the most significant constitutional reforms und...

Yet, despite their numerical strength and undeniable contributions to national development, many young Nigerians continue to question whether they are adequately represented in the governance structures that shape their future. This question is not only legitimate; it is central to the future of Nigeria's democracy. Citizens want a police force that is professional, accountable, efficient and capable of tackling the country’s complex security challenges. But beneath these expectations lies a difficult question: have we built the conditions that make such a police force possible? Since assuming office as Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu has attempted to project a different tone. Written By Nduka Anyanwu    As Nigeria steadily approaches the 2027 General Elections, the national conversation must rise above the narrow confines of electoral contests and political calculations.  Elections, while indispensable to democracy, are only one aspect of a much broader and enduring national project—the building of a democratic culture rooted in justice, inclusion, accountability, and shared national purpose. This is the essence of the vision consistently articulated by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa, who has repeatedly emphasized that the strength of a nation is not measured merely by the periodic conduct of elections, but by the quality of its democratic institutions, the participation of its citizens, and the collective commitment to the common good. Democracy Beyond the Ballot Box In many emerging democracies, political engagement often peaks during election seasons and declines immediately...
