Andoni LGA To Enact By-law To Enforce Compliance To Safety Rules On Its Waterways

The Chairman of Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State Dr.Erastus Awortu says plans are on to enact a By-law to enforce strict compliance to safety rules and regulations by boat operators and sea travellers on the Andoni coastal waters.

Dr. Awortu stated this in Agiokolo Fishing Settlement at Finima Community in Bonny Local Government Area when he paid a condolence visit to the bereaved Families of last week boat mishap along the Bonny waterways that claimed the lives of  eleven passengers.

According to the  Chairman of Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State Dr.Erastus Awortu, the by-law will criminalize failure to use life-saving marine safety equipment, prohibit night journey and overloading in the Andoni water transport system.

Dr. Awortu described the latest boat mishap as a wake-up call to strengthen partnership with his Bonny counterpart to improve on security and safety of travellers in the Andoni-Bonny coastal waters. 

The Andoni Council Chairman while condoling with the bereaved Families of the boat mishap pledged financial assistance and other forms of support to them to ease their plight.

On their parts, victims of the boat mishap Mr and Mrs. Rose Promise who survived the sad incident while recounting their ordeal said they lost four of their children and one grandchild.

Chairman of Bonny Local Government, Mrs Anengi Claude-Wilcox was represented by her Vice, Omoni Longjohn on the visit to the bereaved Andoni Families in Lighthouse, Agiokolo-1 and Agiokolo-2 Fishing Settlements in Finima Community, Bonny.

Bille People Appeal To Governor Fubara To Prevail On Alhaji Asari Dokubo To Stop Evasion Of Territory
