Federal Government Lauds Community Efforts In Ensuring Peace In Niger Delta

The Federal Government through the Ministry of Niger Delta has lauded the commitments of rural communities in tackling security issues and restoring peace in Niger Delta.

The Ministry expressed joy when the Project Steering Committee which include, The Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, Search For Common Ground Nigeria (SFCG), Stakeholders Democratic Network (SDN), Academic Associates Peace Works (AAPW) and Foundation for Partnership Initiative For Development in the Niger Delta (PIND) visited Okirika for a one day Okirika Local Government Area Peace Architecture (LGA-PA) meeting on Wednesday, July 24, 2024.

Speaking, the Director Housing and Urban Department of the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, Architect Agbu Bala Tsoken who led the delegates of the Ministry, stated that he was delighted to hear the massive success stories coming out from the Okirika LGA Peace Architecture in tackling security challenges in the area.

Mr. Tsoken noted that he is delighted to know that the project is on course and that he is happy about what he is seeing.

Recounting on the synergy between the LGA Peace Architecture and Police, Inspector Lovina Elijah who represented the Okirika Divisional Police Officer, SP Mala Sunusi noted that the peace architecture has made their job easier.

She stated that the set up of the peace structure has reduced the number of cases they handle noting that some of the cases that the Peace Architecture reports to them have already been handled by the structure before coming to the Police for record purposes.

On his part, the chairman of the Okirika Local Government Area Peace Architecture, Chief Andrew Igbanibo Amatelimabo expressed gratitude to the consortium partners for considering their Local Government as one of the beneficiaries to the community-centred approach peace and security initiative, noting that since the initiative, there have been improvements on the security situation of the area.

Chief Amatelimabo noted that the application of the lessons learnt from all the trainings have  made Okirika witness the peace the LGA is enjoying now.

Earlier, the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs and the consortium partners paid a visit to His Royal Majesty, King Ateke Tom Michael who appreciated and welcomed the team to Okirika.

The visit of the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs to Okirika is part of the oversight function of the Project Steering Committee in ensuring the Peace and Security Project implemented by Search For Common Ground Nigeria (SFCG), Stakeholders Democratic Network (SDN), Academic Associates Peace Works (AAPW) and Foundation for Partnership Initiative For Development in the Niger Delta (PIND) supported by European Union achieves its set objectives.
