See What Rivers CP said About Nationwide Protest

By: Awajis Josiah-Chijindu

The Rivers State Police Command says it will maintain law and order during the nationwide protests in the State starting from tomorrow, August 1.

In a statement by the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the Command acknowledged the constitutional right of citizens to gather and protest peacefully, not forgetting that mischief makers may want to exploit the opportunity of the planned protests to create chaos and civil unrest.

According to the statement, the Command commended those who have opted for alternate, lawful means of resolving the issues raised by the organizers, while recognizing the possibility of hoodlums hijacking the protests.

SP Iringe-Koko also urged organizers and protesters to conduct themselves in a manner that does not compromise public safety and security or infringe on the rights of others, as the police will not tolerate any act of criminality, such as looting, robbery, or the harassment of innocent citizens, as these are not legitimate forms of protest.

The statement disclosed that the Command is collaborating with sister security agencies and other security stakeholders in the state to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order before, during, and after the protests, and have also put in place measures to ensure a seamless operation, including the sensitization and training of officers, enhanced surveillance, improved patrol intensity, and the deployment of tactical units for crowd control, among other strategies.

The Command reiterated the commitment to respect the rights of peaceful protesters and calls on the organizers to ensure that the protests remain lawful and orderly.

The Police is resolute in its determination to maintain peace and stability during the planned protests and will not hesitate to take appropriate action to prevent any unlawful acts or disruptions to public order.
