By: Martha Igbiks

The Rivers State Government has stressed the importance of proper hand washing hygiene in preventing infectious diseases that can endanger one's health.

At an event marking the 2024 Global Hand Washing Day with the theme " Clean Hands for all Generations, State Commissioner for Water Resources and Rural Development, Prince Samuel Eyiba, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Barrister Mrs. Patience Omereji (KSM), urged residents to prioritize hand washing in their daily routine.

"In a world facing health challenges, washing hands remains one of the most effective methods to prevent illness,"  Barr Omereji said, highlighting that millions still suffer from diseases that could be avoided with proper hygiene practices.

She reiterated the Governor Siminalayi Fubara-led administration's commitment to improving water and sanitation infrastructure to promote hand washing hygiene.

By prioritizing hand washing, Rivers State residents can build healthier communities and ensure clean hands remain a fundamental aspect of public health, the Permanent Secretary stated.

She re- emphasized that beyond the Global Handwashing Day,  people should reinforce the message that hand hygiene shouldn't be a response to outbreaks but a daily and regular necessity for everyone, particularly for the most vulnerable populations, including children and the elderly.

Barr Mrs Patience Omereji (KSM)recalled that the first Global Hand Washing Day took place in October 15th, 2008, as approved by the United Nations General Assembly; after a group known as Global Hand Washing Partnership,(GHP)initiated the hand washing in August, 2008 at the annual World Water Week  in Stockholm, Sweden.
