As Nigeria clamours for a better and sustainable environment, stakeholders in Rivers State have suggested grassroots awareness creation and tree planting as ways to reduce carbon emissions and its effects on humanity.
This was the position at a one-day State-Level Multi-Stakeholders meeting organized by Search For Common Ground with support from European Union on Carbon Offset in Rivers State.
Speaking to Newsmen at the sideline of the event, Chairman of Search for common Ground State Peace Architecture, Mr. Charles Beke stated that the SPA has drawn out plans to visit traditional rulers on the need to engage all community stakeholders towards achieving carbon offset, while one of the facilitators, Mr. Caleb Tidi explained what carbon credit and carbon offset are.
Some of the participants at the event, King Emmanuel Owurong ,Chief Rose Michael-Zoranen and Roselyn Nwuchegbuo appreciated the initiative, while advocating that the government should work towards implementing it's policies.
Earlier, while presenting a report carried out in the Niger Delta region, Mr. Felix-Mary Okpechi revealed that there are both institutional and policy gaps as well as weak measurement, reporting and documentation in the carbon market.
