OPINION- APGA National Chairman Echoes The Need For Technological Innovations As A Catalyst For Growth In Nigeria

Written By Nduka Anyanwu

Nigeria is experiencing a technological revolution that is transforming its economy and society. From agriculture to healthcare, innovations driven by technology are unlocking new opportunities, boosting productivity, and fostering sustainable development.

A New Dawn of Innovation
In recent years, Nigeria has witnessed a surge in technological advancements that are redefining how industries operate, how services are delivered, and how citizens engage with the economy. These innovations serve as catalysts for growth, enabling Nigeria to leapfrog traditional development barriers and position itself as a competitive player in the global digital economy.

Transforming Agriculture
Agriculture remains Nigeria’s largest employer, engaging over 36% of the labor force. Recognizing its importance, entrepreneurs and government agencies are leveraging digital platforms to revolutionize farming practices.

For instance, mobile apps and online platforms connect farmers directly to markets, eliminating middlemen and increasing profit margins. These platforms also provide critical weather updates, pest control advice, and crop management tips, enabling farmers to make informed decisions.

Example:
The FarmCrowdy platform allows smallholder farmers to access funding, training, and markets through digital channels. This has led to increased productivity and income for thousands of farmers across Nigeria.
Improving Healthcare Delivery
Technology is also making significant inroads into Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

Telemedicine platforms are bridging the gap between urban healthcare providers and rural populations, offering remote consultations, diagnosis, and health education.
Mobile health apps are providing vital health information, medication reminders, and appointment scheduling, thus improving health outcomes and reducing the burden on overstretched healthcare facilities.

Example:
The mHealth Nigeria initiative has empowered community health workers with mobile tools, enabling them to deliver better care and collect health data efficiently.

Fostering Financial Inclusion
The rise of mobile money and digital banking services has dramatically increased financial inclusion, especially among Nigeria’s unbanked population. Digital payment platforms like Paystack and Flutterwave facilitate seamless transactions for businesses and individuals, promoting economic activity and entrepreneurship.

According to the Central Bank of Nigeria, over 60 million Nigerians now use mobile money services, a significant increase from previous years, indicating the transformative power of financial technology.

Challenges and Opportunities
While technological innovations present immense opportunities, challenges such as infrastructural deficits, digital literacy gaps, and regulatory frameworks must be addressed to maximize their impact.
Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa, a leading voice in Nigeria’s political landscape, emphasizes: "Technology has the power to accelerate Nigeria’s development, but we must ensure inclusive access and robust policies to harness its full potential."

The Road Ahead
For Nigeria to fully capitalize on technological innovations, stakeholders must prioritize investments in infrastructure, education, and policy reforms. Public-private partnerships can accelerate the deployment of innovative solutions, creating a resilient digital ecosystem that benefits all Nigerians.

Conclusion
Technological innovations are not just supporting Nigeria’s development—they are actively driving it. By embracing digital transformation across sectors, Nigeria can unlock new avenues for growth, improve livelihoods, and position itself as a leader in Africa’s digital future.
