OPINION - Challenges On The Horizon : - APGA National Chairman’s View On Nigeria's Democratic Journey To 2027

Written By Nduka Anyanwu

Nigeria’s march toward a stable and credible democracy by 2027 faces a series of formidable challenges, as articulated by Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). His insights shed light on the critical issues that could shape the nation's political landscape in the coming years.

One of the foremost concerns is the risk of institutional capture of the electoral process by entrenched political elites. Historically, powerful interests have sought to manipulate electoral institutions to preserve their dominance, thereby undermining the very foundation of democratic legitimacy.

Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa emphasizes the need for robust safeguards and reforms that can insulate electoral bodies from undue influence, ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections.

Another significant hurdle is the phenomenon of “pull-down syndrome” within the political class—a tendency for political actors to undermine or destabilize institutions and leaders rather than support constructive progress.

This destructive mindset hampers national development and weakens democratic resilience. Overcoming this requires a cultural shift towards patriotism, integrity, and a commitment to the collective good over personal or partisan gains.

Furthermore, the nation must contend with managing public expectations amidst economic pain. Nigeria’s economic challenges, including unemployment, inflation, and infrastructural deficits, often breed frustration and disillusionment among citizens. Leaders must balance the urgent need for economic reforms with transparent communication and inclusive policies that foster hope and confidence in the democratic process.

Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa underscores that effective leadership, institutional integrity, and a steadfast focus on the national interest are essential ingredients to navigate these complex challenges. The road to 2027 is undoubtedly fraught with hurdles, but with deliberate efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and promote good governance, Nigeria can overcome these obstacles and solidify its democratic gains.

In conclusion, Nigeria’s democratic journey is at a pivotal juncture. The insights of Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa serve as a clarion call for all stakeholders—politicians, institutions, and citizens—to unite in safeguarding the nation’s democracy for a brighter, more stable future.
