By Nduka Anyanwu

In a recent edition of Africa Independent Television’s Democracy Today, the spotlight was on the upcoming 2027 elections, focusing on the state of Nigeria’s political parties, emerging national issues, and the shifting dynamics shaping the nation’s democratic trajectory. Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), whose insights offered a nuanced perspective on the current political landscape and the future of Nigeria’s democracy.

Party Politics and the Road to 2027

Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa emphasized that Nigerian politics is at a pivotal juncture, with parties increasingly adopting strategies to adapt to the evolving needs of the nation. He noted that while traditional party structures still dominate, there is a rising wave of progressive ideologies that seek to foster greater unity, inclusivity, and development. APGA, under his leadership, has been at the forefront of this shift, advocating for reforms that prioritize grassroots participation and transparent governance.

The Role of Digitalization in Strengthening Democracy

A key point raised by Ezeokenwa was the importance of digitalization—a reform APGA began implementing as early as 2024. He highlighted that digital platforms have become instrumental in enhancing transparency, voter engagement, and internal party democracy. Ezeokenwa pointed out that digital tools facilitate more inclusive participation, reduce electoral malpractices, and improve the overall integrity of the electoral process.

“Digitalization is no longer optional; it’s essential,” he stated. “APGA’s early adoption of digital strategies aims to set a precedent for other parties to follow. We believe that technology can be a powerful catalyst for reform and a true reflection of Nigeria’s democratic aspirations.”

Emerging National Issues and the Need for Strategic Alliances.

Ezeokenwa also touched on pressing national issues such as insecurity, economic instability, youth unemployment, and corruption. He expressed optimism that the progressive movement, characterized by collaboration and partnership among like-minded parties, can better address these challenges.

He highlighted the significance of alliances with other progressive parties that profess integration and partnership—an approach that APGA has championed since 2024. Such collaborations are intended to foster a more united front, enabling the democratic process to produce leaders who are committed to national development and inclusive governance.

The Evolving Dynamics of Nigeria’s Democratic Journey

Looking ahead, Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa underscored that Nigeria’s democracy is gradually evolving from a system heavily reliant on patronage and ethnicity towards a more issue-based, participatory democracy. He called for the youth to be more engaged in politics, leveraging digital platforms and civic education to shape the future of Nigeria’s democratic landscape.

He concluded by reaffirming APGA’s commitment to continuous reform, transparency, and inclusivity, emphasizing that the 2027 elections would be a litmus test for Nigeria’s democratic resilience.

In Summary

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, the insights from Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa underscore the importance of innovative reforms such as digitalization, strategic alliances, and issue-based politics. The evolving dynamics within the political landscape suggest that Nigeria’s democracy is on a path of maturation—one that requires concerted efforts from all stakeholders to ensure that the nation’s democratic journey is inclusive, transparent, and resilient.
