The overbearing influence of the state governments is identified as inhibiting factor militating against the smooth performance of the local government councils.
An associate professor of Law with the Rivers State University, Mr Ricthard Nwokocha in an interview with our correspondent stated that President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive on financial autonomy for Local Government Areas in the nation needed constitutional backing.
Mr. Nwokocha stated that the state governments have no legal authority to probe federal allocations meant for the local governments.
Former supervisory councilor with Port Harcourt city council, Mr. Austin Young also stressed that the local government should be fully democratized for it to be independent.
He identified complete autonomy as the panacea for effective development of the local government councils.
