The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Joseph Mukan has assured Residents of the state that adequate measures have been put in place to secure women and children from sexual harassment and other forms of violence.
The commissioner of police gave this assurance when Coalition of Civil Society Organizations, including: Association Against Child Sexual and Gender Based Violence ,AACSGBV; ,International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA; Medical Women Association of Nigeria, NAWOJ, among others protested to the police Headquarters in PortHarcourt to register their disapproval on the incessant abuses and sexual molestations of women and children in the society.
Mr. Mukan promise the organization that their concerns will be given adequate attention, maintaining that though, the Command is yet to record any such violence , proactive measures have been put in place, including the creation of Gender Desks in all Police formations across the Command to tackle the menace, as directed by the Inspector General of Police, IGP; Mohammed Adamu.
The CP further appealed to Parents and Guardians to increase their security consciousness by monitoring the movements and activities of their children, and damn the consequences of Social stigmatization, while promising to deal with erring Officers that may wish to compromise the process and compound felonies.
Presenting their Protest Letters, Ambassador Christie Iwezor and Pastor Ngozi Ighosevbe appealed to the Commissioner of Police to as a matter of urgency address their concerns and stem the tide.
