'Pay us our Salaries' Unpaid Workers of Ahoada West LGA Protest

A group known as Unpaid Workers of Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State has staged a peaceful protest to the State House of Assembly to over non-payment of salary.

The protesters numbering over one hundred carried placards with inscriptions; Hope Ikiriko Pay us our Salary, We are not slaves, as they marched to the gate of the Assembly.

One of the protesters, Mrs. Peace Inam who spoke with journalists said the Local Government Chairman,  Mr. Hope Ikiriko has refused to pay them for over one year despite appeals from different quarters.

Mrs. Inam said the Council Chairman told them they were not from the Local Government, thereby accusing him of discrimination.

Also speaking, Secretary of the group Mr. Nwisaenee Yiznic said the workers had written to several Authorities but that none yielded success.

Mr. Yiznic revealed that the workers were at the Rivers State House of Assembly to inform the Speaker about the matter and call on him to intervene, to save the workers from untold hardship and misery.

Our Correspondent  reports that the workers presented a letter to a Staff of the House for the Speaker.

Reacting to the protest, Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the Ahoada West Local Government Chairman, Mr. Madu Madueke said the protesters were not staff of the local government.

Mr. Madueke wondered why the protesters were laying claims to the local government owing to the fact that there was a verification exercise which authenticated staff of the local government.

Mr. Madueke said the council was not owing any staff, urging the public to disregard the protesters.
