Police Arrest Two persons in connection with Oyigbo Crisis

The Rivers State Police Command has arrested two persons in connection with the attack that led to the death of two persons from the Hausa extraction at  yam market in Oyigbo Local Government Area of the state.

Earlier, on the 5th of this month there was a clash between scavengers of scrap materials from Igbo and Hausa at  the Yam Market.

Police public Relations Officer, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni in a press statement said the Commissioner of Police Mr. Joseph Mukan  summoned the parties and brokered a truce where he warned them to go back and keep the peace.

Mr. Omoni also noted that the bodies of the deceased Hausa men were immediately evacuated and buried in accordance with Islamic injunction, while the area  has been fortified and security beefed up, to avoid  reprisal attack or further breakdown of law and order.

The statement revealed that the reports making  rounds  on social media about an imminent attack  by Fulanis/Nigerian Soldiers and Police is inconceivable and to that extent should be disregarded and ignored as same is frivolous, unverifiable and mischievous, only intended to raise unnecessary alarm and cause panic in the State.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Joseph Mukan,  assured  residents of Oyigbo particularly  those in Oyigbo Timber Pipeline area, that there is no cause for alarm ,advising them to go about their lawful activities without fear of molestation.

The command imagemaker said the Harbingers of the fake news by their acts are enemies of the State and as such, the Command will not spare any effort in arresting and bringing them to justice, while appealing to the residents to remain calm and report all suspicious  movements to the nearest Police station or call the following security numbers;
