As part of effort to preserve the environment, Rivers State government has been called to set up an agency charged with the responsibility to enforce the prohibition of falling of trees in the state.
Executive Director Journalists for Sustainable Development In Nigeria, pastor Parry Benson made the appealed at the flag off of the tree planting Awareness campaign at Isaac Boro park in Port Harcourt.
Pastor Benson decried the ill attitude of some people towards the environment that had endangered the well being of both human beings and animals.
Pastor Benson said tree planting exercise should be done through out the year considering the issue of black soot affecting the state.
On her part, chairperson National Association of Women Journalists NAWOJ Rivers State chapter Mrs Susan Serekara-Nwikhana encouraged residents of the state to embraced the habit of planting trees around their surroundings as a way of preserving the environment.
Mrs Serekara-Nwikhana stressed on the importance of trees to human existence.
The theme for this year's tree planting exercise was Tree Planting campaign Awareness and combating climate change through sustainable tree planting exercise.
Our Correspondent report that members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists Rivers State Council, NAWOJains , and environmentalists graced the occasion.
