Chairman Andoni Local Government Council Barrister Erastus Awortu has restated his administration"s commitment to carry out Human Capital Development and Social Investment Programme aimed at alleviating poverty and creating wealth for the socioeconomic wellbeing of people in the area.
Barrister Awortu made the promise at a Press briefing after a Media Tour on the Projects and other achievements of his administration as part of activities marking his 100-Days in office.
He said the next phase of the Social Investment Programme would be targeted at empowering Widows, Fishermen and Traders economically to enable them maximize profit, grow their businesses and boost household economy in the area.
“We have started some sort of empowerment, we have our Children in the Maritime Institute but we will reach out to the Widows, the Traders and Fishermen in whatever way we can so that we can alleviate poverty”.
The Andoni Council Boss said some repentant youths in the area had undergone 3 days reorientation program to redirect their mindset and promised to engage them in meaningfully ventures to make them self reliant.
“We also know that even as we are trying to make peace in Andoni, the next thing that would come up is jobs for those who have laid down their arms. We will work towards engaging them meaningfully in empowerment programme, we will engage them in some form of training to prepare them for a new life away from arm struggle so that they can be gainfully employed at the end of their training and undertake legitimate businesses and profitable ventures. For those of them that have the requisite qualifications, we are interacting with the few companies operating within Andoni to secure job opportunities for them”.
Barrister Awortu stated that his administration has completed a Solar Powered Potable Water Facility at Ibotirem Community with state-of-the-art Water Treatment Plant and Reticulation Points for effective distribution of safe drinking water to communities in the Isiokwan District.
We have been to Ibotirem community where we installed 20,000 gallon capacity Potable Water Facility with reticulation in parts of the community, the water project has Water Treatment Plant, the water is of premium quality. For us the water project is very important because as Andoni people water has been a major problem for us, and Cholera has been a recurring problem each year in Andoni Local Government, so we are very committed in tackling that scourge and hoping that Andoni would be declared free of Cholera with this move. This is only a first step, we hope to replicate this in other communities within the lifespan of this administration”.
