World Cancer Day: NAWOJ Calls For Collective Effort

Cancer has been identified as the second leading cause of death globally and it occurs at any age.

It is based on this that the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists ,NAWOJ; Rivers State chapter in collaboration with a non- governmental organization, Engraced Life Foundation has organized a World Cancer  Day Pink Room in commemoration of the Day.

The event which takes place tomorrow at Government Girls Secondary School  Rumuokwuta  will feature Breast Cancer Sensitisation Campaign, Bra distribution to students as well as Free Breast Cancer Screening for female teachers and students.

Chairperson NAWOJ Rivers State chapter Mrs Susan Serekara-Nwikhana in an interview with our Correspondent said the gesture was to save millions from preventable deaths  by raising awareness and education about cancer.

She urged governments, relevant authorities and individuals  to take action against the disease especially as one third of cancer are preventable.

Mrs Serekara-Nwikhana expressed hope that all the activities lined up for this year's celebration will lead to progress in reducing the global impact of cancer and create a cancer-free world.

She regretted  that lack of awareness, poor health seeking behaviours, low level of non-governmental investments, funding gaps amongst other factors militate against  efforts at effectively  combating cancer scourge in the society .

The NAWOJ Chairperson called on governments at all  level to provide adequate resources in reducing cancer deaths and also ensure better quality life for patients and survivors.

The theme of this year's World Cancer Day is "Close the care gap".
