...Wishes Nigerians Happy 62nd Anniversary
As Nigeria celebrates 62nd anniversary, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Rivers State Chapter has called on politicians and security agencies to protect female politicians and female journalists in the state.
The Association in a statement issued to commemorate Nigeria's 62nd Independence Anniversary noted that campaigns should be used for political parties to sell their candidates and not to harass and intimidate others, especially female politicians.
Calling for a level playing ground for all candidates, the association maintained that campaigns should be issue-based, rather than gender based and commended the recent increased participation of women in politics.
The association further recalled that one of the female politicians of a certain political party has been lamenting of being harassed since she was unveiled as a running mate of her party and queried why women are not being encouraged to participate in politics.
It advised all female politicians not to be intimidated in carrying out their campaigns, but advised them to play by the rules.
NAWOJ also called for the protection of female journalists who will be covering the campaigns by security agencies and politicians, adding that they should be seen as discharging their constitutional responsibilities.
It prayed that the 62nd Independence anniversary of our dear nation will usher a new political era where citizens will be well informed politically and wished Nigerians a happy 62nd Independence Anniversary Celebration.
