Urgent Call for Action to Prevent Further Tragedies on Eleme Road

 By: Awajis Josiah-Chijindu

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ;Rivers State chapter, is saddened by the tragic and avoidable inferno that occurred on Friday night at the Aleto Bridge in the Eleme Local Government area.

In a statement by the chairperson of NAWOJ Rivers State chapter, Mrs.Susan Serekana-Nwikhana,the  incident which has resulted in the loss of lives and brought immeasurable pain to families, serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for action to address the deteriorating state of the Eleme axis of the east-west road.

For many years, this particular stretch of road has been a death trap, claiming innocent lives and causing immense suffering to countless individuals.

According to the statement, the recent incident where hardworking breadwinners lost their lives while simply returning home, underscores the urgent need for immediate intervention to prevent further tragedies.

Despite numerous appeals to draw the government's attention to the dangers posed by the dilapidated road infrastructure, it is disheartening to note that little action has been taken to address this pressing issue.

As an association, we implore the federal government to expedite the completion of ongoing road works and conduct a comprehensive investigation into the root causes of the recent inferno.

The loss of lives on the Eleme Road is both unacceptable and unsustainable, and it is imperative that decisive steps are taken to ensure the safety and well-being of all road users, She said.

NAWOJ stands in solidarity with the families of the victims, the Eleme community, and the Rivers State Government during this difficult time.

It is our fervent hope that the government will heed our call for immediate action to prevent further tragedies and safeguard the lives and properties of those it is sworn to protect.
