By: Awajis Josiah-Chijindu

As the Siminalayi Fubara led Government marks its one year in office, expectations are high for a breath of fresh air and hopefully a more economically viable state.

The question is how has the Rivers State Government lived up to the expectations of Rivers People?

Our correspondent takes a look at the one year in office of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

May 29, 2023 Governor Siminalayi Fubara became the fifteenth governor of Rivers State since inception in 1967 and the fifth elected governor since the start of democracy in 1999.

Few weeks after assuming office, the government faced various court injunctions, defection of 27 members of the Rivers State house of Assembly to APC, impeachment saga, internal party structural struggle amongst others.

Despite these challenges, the Rivers State Government has completed and commissioned some roads including the Andoni section of the Ogoni-Andoni-Opobo/Nkoro unity road after it was abandoned for 24 years, the Egbede internal road and many others.

The Siminalayi Fubara led Government has also flagged off some road projects like that of the Elele-Omoku-Ndoni road in Ikwerre and Ogba Egbema/Ndoni local government areas,

the Alkania-Ogbogoro road in Obio/Akpor local government area, flag off of the Rivers State Ring Road currently under construction, Trans kalabari road among other projects .

However, Stakeholders in Rivers State have given their performance scorecard on the Siminalayi Fubara's led Government in his one year in office.

A retired Director of the Rivers State ministry of Housing and Property Development Authority, Sir Igbanibo Kemuel asked the government to open up the unreached communities especially the riverine communities in Rivers State by linking them to the road networks, prioritize human capital development, focus on reaching out to the Rivers People by improving the welfare of the citizens of the State.

On his part, executive director of youth and advocacy centre Nigeria Mr. Fyneface Dunamene, while congratulating the governor for his one year in office and the remarkable works he has done so far, urged the government to consolidate on his achievements by focusing on providing employment, improve the health sector and also partner with youths in enhancing security in the State.

Also speaking a lecturer in the Department of Mass communication, University of Calabar, Dr. Ibituru Pepple,  remarked that security in the Siminalayi Fubara's Government has improved, noting that Rivers State is marked as one of the safest place in Nigeria in the recent index released by the National Bureau of Statistics.

With the government's achievements so far and more still to be done, all eyes are on the Siminalayi Fubara Government to see what becomes of the State in the coming days.
