Relief International Africa Commends Rivers CP Disu, Governor Fubara Over Conduct Towards Hunger Protest

By: Awajis Josiah-Chijindu

Relief International Africa has commended the Rivers State Police command led by CP Olatuji Disu and security agencies in Rivers State, for their exemplary conduct during the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests.

The organization appreciated the professionalism and discipline displayed by these forces, contrasting them with reports of more aggressive actions by security personnel in other regions, such as Abuja, Kaduna, Borno, and Kano, where incidents of teargas deployment and provocation towards peaceful protesters were reported.

In a press release by the group program officer Comrade Ejit Josiah, the organization also acknowledged the proactive and compassionate approach of the State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara GSSRS for engaging directly with the protesters.

              Governor Siminalayi Fubara

The gesture of the Governor has been identified as a positive example of leadership and responsiveness to public concerns.

Relief International Africa however, faults the federal government of Nigeria for funding counter protesters which has further inflamed the embers of destruction, anger and more chaos in the face of the protest instead of finding a way to dialogue with the protesters who are very unhappy with the economic reality of the country.

The organization called on the federal government to meet the demands of the protesters and ensure the protection of citizens' rights to peaceful assembly and expression.

The organization also expressed solidarity with the Nigerian people in their pursuit of good governance and justice. It emphasized that the planned protests were scheduled to last for 10 days, urging the government to allow peaceful demonstrations without fear of brutality or intimidation.

The organization cautions security operatives against excessive force, reminding that the world and the human rights community are closely watching the events as it unfolds.
