The Rivers State Government is intensifying efforts at enhancing the welfare of vulnerable groups across the State, with significant steps being taken to improve the conditions of various care facilities.
This was highlighted during a recent visit by the State Commissioner for Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Mr Arugu Ilamu, to key institutions in the State including the Rehabilitation Centre Iriebi, Remand Home, Children Home, and Safe Home in Borikiri, Port Harcourt.
Mr Ilamu while on tour of the facilities, applauded Governor Siminalayi Fubara for providing the necessary support to cater for the State's most vulnerable residents.
He emphasized the ministry’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by these institutions, pledging government's commitment to tackling pending issues.
In a call for greater community involvement, Mr. Ilamu highlighted the contributions of several well-meaning Nigerians who have supported these homes but lamented that their efforts often go unrecognized.
He urged the managers of these facilities to keep detailed records of all donations and contributions to ensure that these acts of generosity are publicly acknowledged.
"Any Nigerian who comes to these homes and donates even one kobo deserves to have their name heard," Mr. Ilamu stated. "We need to keep data and learn to say thank you. This is how we can encourage more goodwill. When people feel appreciated, they will be more willing to assist the government, which cannot do it all alone."
The Commissioner also addressed the situation at the Safe Home, where some inmates are eligible for discharge.
He directed that a formal memo be submitted to him to expedite their release, allowing them to reunite with their families and regain their peace of mind.
At the Safe Home, the Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Commissioner noted that the facility is currently under utilized and assured that the ministry would ensure appropriate cases are referred to the centre, maximizing its potential to serve the community.
Some inmates who spoke with the media expressed their gratitude for the care and attention they have received, noting that their lives have significantly improved due to the ministry’s efforts. They also joined in thanking the government and the ministry for their ongoing support.
The Commissioner was accompanied on the visit by Dr. Justina Jumbo, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry , alongside several directors.
The visit marks a significant step in the State government's ongoing commitment to improving the welfare of the vulnerable population.
