Federal Government Provides Rural Emergency Health Care Service For Maternal Health

The Federal Government of Nigeria through the Federal Ministry of Health has prioritize the health of pregnant women, babies under five years and new born babies through its impact rural emergency service and maternal transport program. 

The program which is a world bank collaborative program with the ministry of health, National  Emergency  Medical  Services and Ambulance System from the Federal Ministry of Health
    During the visit to Mayor's office 

Representing the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare,  Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, the Head of Operations, National  Emergency  Medical  Services and Ambulance System from the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr  Emuren Doubra stated that the reason for the program is to ensure that pregnant women, children under five and new born babies are safe in periods of emergencies.

Dr. Doubra stated this while speaking to our correspondent after the visit to the chairman of Association of Local Government of Nigeria, ALGON, Rivers State chapter, Honourable Ezebunwo Ichemati in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State.

Dr. Doubra revealed that Rivers State has been chosen as one of the States that will implement the pilot of rural emergency service and maternal transport in the bid to reduce maternal mortality, under five and new born mortality in Nigeria.

While appreciating the Rivers State Government and the Rivers State Ministry of Health for prioritizing maternal health in the State, Dr. Doubra stated that the Federal government through NEMSAS will provide fund to State to carry out awareness program, trainings, coordinate meetings that will lead to the successful implementation of the program.

Earlier, Director Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System, Rivers State Ministry of Health, Dr Sylvanus Ojum stated that Nigeria ranks as one of the lowest countries in the world as concerns maternal health care delivery.

According to him, the focus of the program is to improve the maternal health care while reducing the mortality rate of pregnant women and new born babies in Rivers State and Nigeria as a whole.

Dr. Ojum stated that they are working in all local government areas and the essence is to ensure that pregnant women in emergency cases can be moved from the healthcare centers to the hospitals, taking proper care for free of charge.

Also Speaking, the  chairman of Association of Local Government of Nigeria, ALGON, Rivers State chapter, Mayor of Port Harcourt, Hon. Ezebunwo Ichemati lamented that it is an unfortunate situation that there have been an increase in mortality rate in the country since 2017 till date.

The mayor of Port Harcourt stated that they are happy to have the program implemented in the State and that they will partner the Federal Government, NEMSAS to ensure that the program is successful.

To ensure the successful implementation of the program in Rivers State, Road and waterways ambulances have been provided for easy transportation of pregnant women to the hospital.

Ghost Lawyer Defends Client in Port Harcourt Court

  A magistrate court sitting in Port Harcourt was thrown into confusion today Thursday, the 12th of March, 2026 when it noticed that a lawyer who had died since last year, 2025 December appeared before it on Tuesday the 10th of February, 2026 to conduct his matter. When the matter was called for hearing, and the lawyer was not present, the court on inquiry was informed by the litigant that his lawyer died since last year December 2025. The court, presided over by Senior Magistrate Kingsley Briggs became confused and had to search through his record book, where he confirmed the lawyer’s presence during proceeding on Tuesday the 10th day of February, 2026.
