OPINION: APGA National Chairman Supports SERAP’S And The New INEC Chairman's Call For Prioritizing Prosecution Of Electoral Crimes To Strengthen Nigeria's Democracy

 Written By Nduka Anyanwu

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa has expressed strong support for the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project’s (SERAP) recent appeal to the newly confirmed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, who also pushes for ELECTORAL OFFENCES COMMISSION.

In his view, SERAP’s and the new Chairman’s call to prioritize the effective prosecution of electoral crimes is a critical step towards safeguarding the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process.

The APGA leadership concurs with SERAP’s and INEC Chairman’s assertion that impunity for past electoral offences—such as violence, bribery, vote-buying, conspiracy, and undue influence—poses a significant threat to the conduct of free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria.

The organization highlights that without decisive action and accountability, these infractions continue to undermine voters’ confidence and weaken democratic institutions.

The APGA Chairman emphasized that strong legal frameworks and the swift prosecution of electoral offences are essential components of a robust electoral system. He advocates for comprehensive reforms that include provisions for timely justice and access to remedies for victims of electoral violations.

Such measures, he believes, will not only deter future misconduct but also reinforce the culture of accountability and integrity in Nigeria’s electoral processes.

Furthermore, the APGA leader supports SERAP’s and the push by the new INEC Boss call for amendments to the Electoral Act to facilitate the effective investigation and prosecution of electoral offences.

He stressed that these reforms are vital for ensuring that elections in Nigeria are conducted in conformity with the Nigerian Constitution and international standards.

In conclusion, the APGA National Chairman reiterated the party’s commitment to upholding democratic principles and called on all relevant stakeholders to work collaboratively towards establishing a transparent and accountable electoral environment.

He believes that prioritizing the prosecution of electoral crimes will help restore public confidence and foster a more credible democratic process in Nigeria.
