OPINION – Regional Realignment - Nigeria's Critical Swing Towards National Unity Over Regional Dominance, Says APGA Chairman
Written By Nduka Anyanwu
In a compelling call for a paradigm shift in Nigerian politics, Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has strongly advocated for a strategic "regional realignment" that emphasizes national unity over regional dominance. His stance signals a pivotal moment as discussions intensify around the kind of leadership Nigeria needs to navigate its complex geopolitical landscape.
A SHIFT FROM ISOLATION TO COLLABORATION
Ezeokenwa’s core message underscores that no single region can unilaterally secure the presidency or drive the nation’s development. He emphasizes that true progress hinges on forging strategic alliances across Nigeria’s diverse geopolitical zones — the North, South West, South South, and the East. This approach champions the idea that Nigeria’s unity is its strength, and that regional interests must be harmonized for the country’s collective growth.
He states plainly that the notion of an "Igbo presidency" or any regional presidency in isolation is a mirage without cross-regional support and collaboration. "You cannot achieve national leadership through regional isolation; it requires deliberate partnerships and shared visions," Ezeokenwa asserts.
STRATEGIC SUPPORT FOR INCUMBENT
In a move reflecting this philosophy, APGA has declared its intention to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for a second term in 2027. Ezeokenwa describes this decision as a "strategic choice for development," emphasizing that collaboration with the current administration aligns with Nigeria’s broader national interests rather than mere political expediency.
This support also underscores a broader belief that Nigeria’s future depends on united frontiers rather than fragmented regional pursuits. It is a recognition that inclusive governance and federal collaboration are essential for sustainable growth.
MAINSTREAMING THE SOUTH EAST
Ezeokenwa highlights the need for the South East to reconnect with Nigeria’s mainstream political processes. Despite its rich contributions and potential, the region contributed less than 10% of the total votes in the 2023 elections. Without active engagement and strategic alliances, the South East risks further marginalization.
He advocates for the region’s integration into national decision-making frameworks, arguing that regional interests can only be advanced through active participation in federal politics and policy-making.
TOWARDS A TRULY NATIONAL PLATFORM
Ezeokenwa’s "DRIVE-APGA" agenda centers on promoting ideologies that transcend regional or personal ambitions, aiming to position APGA as a genuinely national party. The goal is to foster unity and shared purpose, rather than regional dominance, thereby creating a political platform capable of leading Nigeria into a cohesive future.
LOOKING AHEAD: 2027 AND BEYOND
Following this trajectory, APGA is unlikely to field its own presidential candidate in 2027. Instead, the party’s focus will be on supporting the incumbent, reinforcing the importance of alliance-building and strategic cooperation. This approach aims to secure tangible benefits for the South East and other regions, including infrastructure development and federal inclusion, aligned with the federal government’s "Renewed Hope" agenda.
CONCLUSION
Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa’s call for regional realignment signifies a critical pivot in Nigeria’s political landscape. It reflects a desire for a leadership that unites the nation rather than divides it along regional lines, emphasizing that Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity and collective purpose. As the country approaches crucial elections, this emphasis on national unity may well define Nigeria’s path toward stability, development, and inclusive growth.
