AN ARTICLE - Political Parties Are Foundations Of Democracy — APGA National Chairman

Written By Nduka Anyanwu

The National Chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance, Sly Ezeokenwa, has emphasized that political parties occupy a far greater role in democratic societies than merely contesting elections or producing candidates for public office, describing them as foundational democratic institutions whose conduct and internal operations directly shape public confidence in governance and the electoral system.

According to Barrister Ezeokenwa, political parties remain central to the survival and advancement of democracy because they serve as the critical bridge between citizens and government.

He noted that beyond electoral contests, political parties are responsible for aggregating public interests, articulating policy directions, mobilizing political participation, and creating platforms through which citizens can contribute meaningfully to national development.

He stressed that in every functional democracy, political parties must embody the principles of accountability, transparency, discipline, and responsible leadership. According to him, the credibility of any democratic system is closely tied to the credibility of its political parties, as transparent operations and strong internal governance structures help strengthen public trust in democratic institutions.

Barrister Ezeokenwa further observed that where political parties are weakened by poor accountability, opaque financial practices, lack of institutional discipline, and disregard for regulatory procedures, citizens’ confidence in governance and elections inevitably declines.

He warned that political parties must not be reduced to temporary electoral platforms activated only during campaign periods, but should instead function as enduring institutions that shape political culture, leadership values, and national stability.

Speaking on the evolving democratic landscape in Nigeria, the APGA National Chairman noted that political parties carry even greater responsibilities in emerging democracies where institutional growth and democratic consolidation remain ongoing priorities.

He emphasized the need for parties to continually embrace reforms that promote internal democracy, financial accountability, inclusiveness, and strict compliance with electoral regulations.

He also highlighted the increasing importance of institutional reforms introduced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, particularly in the areas of political party regulation, financial reporting, and audit compliance.

According to him, initiatives such as the Political Party Finance Reporting and Audit System (PFRAS) reflect a broader recognition that sustainable democracy depends not only on credible elections, but also on credible and accountable political institutions.

Barrister Ezeokenwa maintained that democracy thrives when political parties lead by example through ethical leadership, prudent financial management, respect for the rule of law, and adherence to democratic principles.

He described these values as fundamental obligations necessary for preserving the integrity of governance and strengthening democratic stability.

Reaffirming APGA’s commitment to responsible party administration and democratic best practices, he stated that strengthening political parties ultimately means strengthening democracy itself.

He added that when political parties function responsibly, citizens develop greater trust in public institutions, electoral processes become more credible, and governance gains legitimacy.

The APGA National Chairman concluded by urging political parties across Nigeria to continue evolving into stronger, more accountable, and policy-driven institutions capable of advancing national unity, democratic stability, and sustainable development.
