The Centre for Environment, Human Rights and Development (CEHRD) in a bid to strengthen the capacity of key stakeholders on Advocacy, organized a CEHRD Staff and Alliance Members Advocacy Accelerated Training for State Institutions, Civil Society Organizations and its staff members in Port Harcourt.
The training is part of CEHRD's effort to have a seamless relationship with River State Agencies and CSOs to actualize a State Standard of Operation to strengthen the implementation of The Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law in Rivers State.
Speaking after the event, Centre for Environment, Human Rights and Development (CEHRD) Project Lead for Strengthening the Implementation of VAPP Law in Rivers State, Mr. Josiah Egbilika remarked that it was necessary to build the capacity of State Institutions, CSOs and its Staff Members on Advocacy.
He noted that the training was necessary to build a collaborative efforts towards actualizing the common expected advocacy result, set Standard of Operations for the implementation of VAPP Law in the State.
Mr. Egbilika revealed that advocacy is a process that combines different activities to achieve a set result.
He stated that while courtesy calls, consultation visits, roundtable discussions are part of an advocacy engagement, they are not advocacy on their own.
The Orphanage, Vulnerable Children (OVC) Desk officer, Rivers State Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Mrs. Queen Maxwell while appreciating CEHRD for the timely training remarked that State Institutions need such training as this to strengthen their work and delivery.
Mrs. Maxwell informed that she will engage with the Permanent Secretary of her ministry for a possible step down of the training to staff members.
One of the participants, CEHRD's staff, Miss Baridapsi Nyianghan stated that the training was an eye opener and has expanded her knowledge on what advocacy is.
She remarked that she never knew what an EAR was but through the training, she has realized that advocacy must have an Expected Advocacy Result (EAR), engage decision makers, noting that she will incorporate her knowledge to her work going forward.
The training was attended by Rivers State Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Rivers State Ministry of Justice, Rivers State Ministry of Women Affairs and Rivers State Ministry of Health.
Others are: Rivers State Response Team Against Violence Against Women and Girls, Gender And Development Action (GADA), Centre for Basic Rights, Protection and Accountability, Staff of Centre for Environment, Human Rights and Development (CEHRD) and the media.
